Important Information
Will there be cancellation fees?
Most of the time, yes. If cancelling your policy during the policy term, there will likely be cancellation fees charged by your insurance company. These fees vary by company, and by how much time is remaining in your policy term. In general, the more time remaining, the higher the penalty. Be sure to discuss these fees with your broker prior to cancellation.
Can I just stop making payments? No. If you wish to cancel your policy, don't just stop making your payments - this will result in your insurance company cancelling your policy rather than you cancelling your policy. You must request the policy cancellation in writing.
If you don't officially cancel your policy, your coverage will continue until it is cancelled for non-payment. This may have an impact on your ability to get insurance coverage in the future and the premium may be higher due to the cancellation. Also, you may not be able to pay for your policy in instalments anymore.
I will be away for the next 6 months and don't want to pay for insurance on my car while it's not being used. Should I cancel my policy?
In general, no. Cancelling your policy will result in a gap in insurance coverage which may affect your insurance rates in the future. Also, your car will not be protected against theft or vandalism while it is parked or in storage. While your car will not be insured to drive, maintaining theft and vandalism coverage on your car is an inexpensive way to continue your insurance coverage.
I am switching insurance providers, when should I cancel my old policy?
Always have a new policy in place before cancelling your old auto insurance coverage. You don't want to have a gap in protection for even one day.
